  7. shaft, the drive
  8. shaft is hollow and
  9. flexible, providing
  10. a light-weight and
  11. strong connection. 
  12. The drive shaft
  13. transfers the
  14. rotation of the
  15. transmission to the
  16. differential which,
  17. in turn, turns the
  18. wheels.

  20. Two drive shafts
  21. are common,
  22. Hotchkiss and
  23. torque tube drive. 
  24. Open with
  25. universal-joints at
  26. both ends, the
  27. Hotchkiss drive
  28. provides wheel
  29. drive thrust from
  30. the drive shaft by
  31. springs and control
  32. arms.  The torque
  33. tube drive, a
  34. hollow steel tube,
  35. connects to the
  36. transmission and to
  37. the rear axle
  38. housing.  Fastened
  39. to the axle
  40. housing, the torque
  41. tube drive contains
  42. the drive shaft
  43. within the hollow
  44. tube.  and the
  45. transmission end is
  46. fastened with a
  47. torque ball.
