- The Drive Shaft
-
- Connected to the
- transmission output
- shaft and to the
- differential pinion
- shaft, the drive
- shaft is hollow and
- flexible, providing
- a light-weight and
- strong connection.
- The drive shaft
- transfers the
- rotation of the
- transmission to the
- differential which,
- in turn, turns the
- wheels.
-
- Two drive shafts
- are common,
- Hotchkiss and
- torque tube drive.
- Open with
- universal-joints at
- both ends, the
- Hotchkiss drive
- provides wheel
- drive thrust from
- the drive shaft by
- springs and control
- arms. The torque
- tube drive, a
- hollow steel tube,
- connects to the
- transmission and to
- the rear axle
- housing. Fastened
- to the axle
- housing, the torque
- tube drive contains
- the drive shaft
- within the hollow
- tube. and the
- transmission end is
- fastened with a
- torque ball.
